Beyond the Finish Line: African American Women in Sports and Allyson Felix’s Fight for Change

Introduction

African American women have long been at the forefront of athletic excellence, pushing boundaries in sports that once excluded or underestimated them. Their influence doesn’t just stop when competing, as many use their platforms to advocate for equality, representation, and community empowerment. From track and field to basketball, tennis, gymnastics, and beyond, these women have consistently challenged stereotypes and redefined what excellence looks like. They have navigated systems that were not built to support them, yet still managed to rise to the top through resilience, talent, and extreme determination.

Confronting Racism

An example of someone who used her platform to confront racial injustice is Allyson Felix, a now retired Olympic track and field star. Throughout her career, Felix navigated a sports industry that often failed to equally support Black women athletes. In a 2019 op-ed, she described how corporate sponsorship structures disproportionately disadvantage women, particularly women of color, by prioritizing profit over athlete well being (Felix, 2019). Beyond sponsorship inequality, Felix has consistently spoken about the broader racial and gender disparities embedded in professional sports systems, using her visibility to push for accountability and equity (Longman, 2019). Her willingness to speak out reflects how African American women athletes challenge injustice not only through performance, but through advocacy and leadership.

Standing up for Maternal Rights

Felix’s advocacy for maternity rights marked a turning point not only in her career but in the entire athletic community. After becoming pregnant, she faced pressure from her former sponsor, Nike, to accept reduced compensation, a situation that exposed how poorly the industry supported pregnant athletes. Instead of staying silent, she chose to speak publicly about the issue, sparking widespread discussion and ultimately contributing to policy changes within major athletic brands.

She also testified before Congress about the challenges women face during pregnancy, showing her commitment to protecting mothers both inside and outside of sports. Felix’s courage in sharing her story helped reinforce the idea that motherhood and elite athletic performance can successfully coexist.

Lasting Legacy

Felix’s impact extends far beyond her Olympic medals, particularly through the creation of her company, Saysh. After leaving Nike, Felix founded Saysh to address the lack of support women athletes receive, especially during pregnancy and postpartum recovery. The brand was intentionally designed by and for women , emphasizing inclusivity, comfort, and respect rather then punishment for motherhood (Saysh, n.d.). According to The New York Times, Felix’s decision to launch her own company represents a broader shift in athlete empowerment, showing how women can reclaim control when traditional sports institutions fall short (Longman, 2019). Saysh stands as a lasting symbol of Felix’s commitment to reshaping the sports industry into one that values women’s bodies, careers, and long-term well-being.

Their achievements have opened doors for future generations, proving that greatness thrives when diversity is embraced. At the same time, they have used their platforms to advocate for social justice, gender equality, and community empowerment. Together, their stories form a powerful legacy that continues to inspire change both within sports and throughout society.
